  • WoodsmanTA KEK 04 / 05 / 2018 Reply

definitely not worth it for 7 minutes build time

  • demonbre 04 / 05 / 2018 Reply

I think that the color of the ship in the movies is much more subdued. I can't decide which coloring I prefer…

  • DargoDog 04 / 05 / 2018 Reply

Love the time-lapse videos!!! It would be cool if they gave you the option (especially in the UCS version) to have the fairings on or off, but that would require a bunch more parts. Thanks for sharing!!!

I like all these new speed builds

  • Alexandre Armont 04 / 05 / 2018 Reply

I just finished building mine and I wanted to avoid the time-lapse build until I was done assembling the Y-Wing. 5-6 hours build, took dinner and supper breaks.

A great UCS experience, there are flaws but the overall result is impressive… most impressive.

I've had the ORIGINAL from 1999 (with Vader's TIE) with the half-golfball pieces so for me, 19 years later, this is a good way to reexplore a part of my childhood.

The greeblings on the back, underside and even the twin engines are what already make this set special. And yes, I wish we had less stickers. Doesn't change the fact that LEGO really nailed it.

My second UCS, my first one from the Star Wars line… and I'm happy.

  • Tim Terrell 04 / 05 / 2018 Reply

UCS builds should have all printed pieces. Leave the stickers for the kids sets.

What I see so far is awesome. Looks like hey used the Y-Wing from Star Wars as seen in "The Art of Star Wars"

Hi Jang, this set looked a lot like the non UCS Y-Wing. Is there a difference or is it just scaled up?

Why would have made this UCS great is if they included the option to add armour panels. So you could choose between The Original Trilogy version or The Clone Wars version.

This model is beautiful in nearly every way…except one: The canopy. GEEK ALERT! I’m gonna go full SW geek here. Lego has another chance to go for realism, gets it nearly there and biffs it with the canopy yet again. As far as I have ever seen in both A New Hope and in several movie-accurate models, the canopy does not open vertically like an X-Wing or the T-47 Air/Snowspeeder. A section of the canopy opens sideways. I don’t see how Lego can’t introduce a new canopy for a UCS Y-Wing where it is built up with flat panels like they did with the UCS Snowspeeder and have one section open sideways. I can actually visualize what parts I would have used and how I would have used them. It’s disappointing because UCS models are generally very accurate…in most cases…to the ships in the movies and this is one thing Lego keeps doing with all Y-Wings (UCS scale and “minifig scale”). It’s pretty much a cop-out at this point to just take the standard Y-Wing shaped canopy and slap it on there with a couple hinge pieces.

Also stickers don’t bother me for a UCS set. A UCS set is more for young adults and adults. I see the stickers as being just like decals you’d have to apply to a non-Lego model which require a lot of time and delicate handwork to get right. In this case they’re obviously just like the stickers you get on other Lego sets, but with how much it cost, you’re probably more likely to really try to get the alignment right. Just like non-Lego decals, Lego stickers are a pain to remove and reapply. IMO its really part of the experience of putting something like this together.

Ok, that ends my geek rant. That all being said, it is truly a work of art otherwise and if I could scrape together the money (maybe if I stop making Bricklink purchases for awhile), I’d buy it and proudly display it…and then probably try to fix the canopy (with a Bricklink purchase).

TL;DR – Pretty sure Y-Wing canopy doesn’t open like that. Also stickers are ok.

    Looking forward to the review!

One of my FAVORITE ships!!! Curious though, how sturdy are the wings / support pylons? The tie fighter wings fall off all the time. I could see the pylons here being flimsy perhaps.
